  • Centennial Valley, Montana. LEAF interns work with summer staff Sally Cathey doing pebble counts in Hell Roaring Creek at the Alaska. Sally and the interns with help from mentor Mike Pak measure 100 pebbles at each of 13 designated sites along the stream. This is one way to measure how the stream bed changes. The diversity of the bedrock is one indication of the health of the stream. They measure the “B” axis of the rock and measure rocks in an area of the stream where the water is moving more rapidly.
