Gariya, Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Vishal, age 12, with sister Santoshi, age 7. The health problems in the village started 20 years ago. Before that everyone was fine. Vishal’s legs started to turn out when he was 2 or 3 years old. It has just been getting worse for the last 10 years. Santoshi has brown teeth which is one symptom of too much fluoride in the water. Fluorosis is a defect of tooth enamel caused by too much fluoride intake during the first 6 - 8 years of life. The damage to the enamel is permanent and the teeth become more porous. Drinking water tested in Gariya showed extremely elevated levels of fluoride as high as 7.79 ppm. The WHO specifies the maximum level of fluoride to be 1.5 ppm with 1.0 ppm the optimum. Elevated levels can result in skeletal fluorosis that affects the bones and major joints in the body. Symptoms of fluoride toxicity include stiff, painful joints, bony, painful lumps where tendons and ligaments attach to the bones, chronic fatigue syndrome, white or brown spots on teeth, fatigue and brain fog, gastrointestinal problems, kidney problems and severe muscle weakness among other symptoms.
